
Mercedes-Benz launched its first production car, the Smart EQ from its new EQ sub-brand division at this week’s 2018 Geneva International Motor Show.
Previously the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, is now launched as the Smart EQ ForTwo, with a new name and badge.
Also on show in Geneva were the Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio and Smart EQ ForFour. All 3 are 100% electric.
All three EQ models feature the same powertrain, a single rear mounted motor delivering 80 hp. The battery pack is a 17.6 kw unit giving a range of 99 miles per charge. A 22kw fast charger will give an 80% charge in 40 minutes.
Launched with a special ‘nightsky’ editions the cars will come with black paintwork accented with the signature blue colour of the EQ technology and product brand. The cars are nippy with a park me anywhere attitude make them the perfect electric city cars.
The Smart EQ control app (available from mid 2-18) will allow driver to check current charge levels, find charging stations and adjust the cars internal temperature as well as other features. The built in charging service will also make it easier to find the nearest charging station and to make payment.
