Porsche Macan to go all Electric
Porsche has announce it intends to make its best-selling mid-size SUV, the Macan into an electric vehicle. This will follow the Taycan and Taycan Cross Tourismo announced in 2018. Production of the all electric Porsche Macan will start in 2020, the company announced this week. It will be produced in Leipzig, Germany, where the current ICE Macan is manufactured.
The Taycan, the company’s first all-electric vehicle, currently going through extensive testing in pre-production models will arrive to market late 2019 and early 2020.
Porsche stated that it decided to turn the next-generation Macan into an electric vehicle because it creates the “opportunity to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line.”
800 Volt Architecture
The Macan mid-size SUV will also feature the same 800-volt architecture to be featured in the Taycan. This, it is promised will give a 60 mile range in just a four minute charge.
“Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character,” said Oliver Blume, chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche.
“By 2022 we will be investing more than €6bn in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next 10 years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimized petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars.
“Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”
Porsche isn’t backing away from ICE vehicles altogether. Over the next decade, the company “will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimized petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars,” Blume said. “Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”
